We are the ONLY group authorized to perform the catalogues of the legendary EC Comics and Famous Monsters LIVE in the world!

We combine the art, drama and comedy of a vintage radio program with the live entertainment of a variety show. Shows are built around performances of vintage pop culture gems, usually comic book stories, along with live sound fx, music and projected art. In between the featured stories are short acts, sultry singing, prizes, special guests and live music.

No joke is too low or innuendo left un-emphasized.

"The Unpublished EC 3D Comic – Revealed!"

Captured Aural Phantasy Theater returns to Comic-con with a World Premier! As the only group authorized by the legendary 50’s publisher EC to perform their comics, we will present the lost 1954 EC sci-fi comic in 3D for the first time- ever – at Comic-con International in San Diego on Saturday, July 11! Our panel, The Unpublished EC 3D Comic – Revealed!, begins at 6:30pm in Room 26AB at the San Diego Convention Center.

Working with members of the EC family and the Los Angeles 3D Club, the comic is being converted into three dimensions for this debut, as intended over 60 years ago, but never completed. Highlighting a brief discussion lead by Ben Dickow (guest lecturer, Otis College of Art), Captured Aural Phantasy Theater will be dramatically reading excerpts from the unpublished comic, while the images are shown to the audience in 3D. But don’t worry! Special 3D glasses will be provided to enjoy the projected artwork!

In 1953 and 54, EC created 3D comics, jumping on the fad sweeping the country. Three comics were planned, but only two were published. The third, focused on sci-fi and fantasy stories, was dropped amid the fizzling of the fad and the comic industry’s run-ins with the Senate and censors. Los Angeles performance group Captured Aural Phantasy Theater has recently partnered with EC to premier the unpublished 3D issue at this event. A short discussion will talk about EC's involvement in 3D comics, the history of 3D comics and how these books connect with the comic controversies of 1954, which lead to the demise of EC’s legendary horror titles, such as Tales from the Crypt.

Captured Aural Phantasy Theater, LA's original comic book performance group, presents the history of comic books as part of a show that spans narrative illustration of the 18th Century to today.

This show will lay the groundwork for our upcoming performance at San Diego Comic-con in July!

In THE HISTORY OF COMIC BOOKS LIVE!, Captured Aural Phantasy Theater's MC Ben Dickow, who lectures on the history of comics at Otis College of Art and Design, leads audiences through a personal visual tour of comic book evolution, connecting it with historic developments in art, literature, politics and his own life along the way. The presentation is accompanied by music, special effects, audience participation and El Cid's spectacular cocktails. Its an informative geek-fest with history, comic books and booze!

Witness tales from the brutal pages of vintage crime comic books – exposed! – uncensored and LIVE! For 1 night only Sunday, May 3, Captured Aural Phantasy Theater blows a kiss to our hometown, Los Angeles, by blending hard-boiled culture and the absurd in an evening of performances inspired by noir movies, pulp fiction and the fierce crime comic books of the 40’s. The show features our unique multi-media, old radio show-style performances of vintage comics plus projected art, live jazz/cabaret music, and other thrilling acts.

We will be showcasing live performances of stories pulled from classic, mid-century crime comic books presented in our signature variety show/ old radio show style. These aren’t heart-warming tales – these are the bloody comic book crime stories that were burned in the 40’s and banned in the 50’s for being too hard-boiled, too violent and too much!

Plus, we have recently been given permission to premier a comic story by legendary 1950’s comic book publisher EC for this show! They were the gold standard of comics in the Golden Age. Do miss it!
